Plot Details

The story of Aghathiyaa shifts between present-day events and the colonial period. Aghathiyaa, an art director, rents an old bungalow to shoot a movie. When the shoot gets delayed, he turns the place into a haunted house attraction to recover his investment. However, real supernatural events begin to take place, scaring the visitors and the crew.

As Aghathiyaa starts digging into the history of the bungalow, the story jumps to the 1940s, where Siddharthan, a Siddha doctor, is called to treat Matylda, the sister of a British officer named Edwin Duplex. What follows is a thrilling connection between the past and present, with dark secrets and mystical confrontations.

Cast Performance

Jiiva gives a strong performance as Aghathiyaa, portraying both courage and fear as he deals with the strange happenings. Arjun Sarja plays Siddharthan, and his role as a powerful Siddha practitioner adds depth to the storyline. His presence is commanding and memorable.

Raashi Khanna as Veena, Aghathiyaa’s childhood friend and love interest, brings emotional balance to the plot. Yogi Babu and Radha Ravi as part of the supporting cast provide some light moments and tension as the story progresses.

Direction and Screenplay

Director Pa. Vijay has taken a bold step by mixing multiple genres — horror, history, and fantasy. While the idea is fresh, the screenplay sometimes feels crowded with too many subplots. The non-linear narrative keeps the suspense alive but may confuse some viewers due to rapid shifts between timelines.

The film’s attempt to connect two timelines with emotional and supernatural layers is creative, though not always seamless. However, the effort to bring a different flavor to Tamil cinema is clear.

Visuals and Music

The production design stands out, with beautiful recreations of colonial-era settings and haunted mansion vibes. Dipak Kumar Pathy’s cinematography captures the dark, eerie atmosphere effectively.

The visual effects, especially during the climactic motion-capture sequence, are impressive, although some parts may feel overdone. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score adds to the tension, and songs like “En Iniya Pon Nilave” bring an emotional touch.

Reviews and Ratings

Aghathiyaa has received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.

Popular websites have rated it as follows:

  • One major platform gave it 3 out of 5 stars, appreciating the entertainment factor but pointing out the unbelievable twists.
  • Another review mentioned good performances and visuals but criticized the outdated melodrama and confusing script.
  • Some harsh reviews rated it 1.5 out of 5, calling it a scattered horror movie that failed to thrill or scare.

Public Opinion

Among viewers, opinions are divided. Many liked the new attempt to blend genres and loved Arjun Sarja’s performance. The unique storyline and horror elements attracted a section of the audience.

However, some found the story too complicated, with many themes clashing and too much happening at once. The visual effects during the climax got mixed reactions, some called them impressive, while others found them too flashy.

Conclusion

Aghathiyaa is an ambitious film that tries to bring something fresh by mixing horror, history, and fantasy. Strong acting, good visuals, and music make it worth a watch for those who enjoy experimental films. But, the complicated storyline and too many ideas thrown together may not appeal to everyone. For viewers looking for a different experience, Aghathiyaa can be a one-time watch that offers both thrills and emotional moments.
