Plot and Storyline

The story of Ace is about Kannan, played by Vijay Sethupathi, who dreams of living in a foreign country. He thinks this will give him a better life, but everything goes wrong. He gets mixed up with bad people who are criminals. The main part of the story is about a big theft that Kannan and his friends plan. They think this robbery will solve all their money problems and let them live happily, but it becomes a trap that puts their lives in danger.

The movie tries to be many things at once – it wants to be a crime thriller, a comedy, and a love story. Yogi Babu provides most of the funny moments in the film. The story talks about how people sometimes make bad choices when they are desperate for money or a better life. However, many critics said the movie doesn’t tell this story very well. The plot moves too slowly and becomes boring in many parts.

Cast Performances

Vijay Sethupathi is known for being a very good actor who can play any type of character. In Ace, he tries his best to make the movie work, but even his good acting couldn’t save the film from its problems. Critics said that while he worked hard in his role, it wasn’t enough to make up for the movie’s slow pace and weak story.

Rukmini Vasanth, who plays the main female character, did a really good job. Many people said she looked great on screen and acted very well. Her scenes with Vijay Sethupathi were some of the better parts of the movie. She brought life to her character even though the script didn’t give her much to work with.

Yogi Babu is famous for making people laugh in Tamil movies. In this film, he teams up with Vijay Sethupathi to create funny moments. The movie has all the usual things you’d expect in a bank robbery film, with both actors trying to make people laugh. The other actors like B.S. Avinash also did their jobs well, but their characters weren’t developed enough to make a big impact on the story.

Direction and Technical Aspects

Director P. Aarumugakumar tried to make a movie that combines different types of stories – comedy, crime, and thriller. But he wasn’t very successful in mixing all these elements together. The biggest problem with the movie is that it’s very slow and predictable. From the beginning to the end, the movie moves at a snail’s pace, which makes it boring to watch.

The film can’t decide if it wants to be funny or serious. When it tries to be both at the same time, it becomes confusing. The pacing is terrible – nothing exciting happens for long periods, and viewers might feel like sleeping. This is especially bad for a movie about robbery, which should be exciting and keep people on the edge of their seats.

The camera work and editing are okay but nothing special. The movie was shot in different countries, which looks nice, but the director didn’t use these beautiful locations properly. They could have made the movie more interesting visually, but instead, they just serve as a pretty background.

Critical Reception and Ratings

Most movie critics didn’t like Ace very much. The reviews were mostly negative or average. India Today, a popular magazine, gave the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars. They said the movie works better when it focuses on the robbery parts, but it fails to stay consistent throughout. They called it a missed opportunity because it could have been much better.

IMDb, a popular movie website, shows a rating of 9.0, but this seems to be from only a few people who saw it early. Most other review websites were much more critical. 123Telugu, another review site, said Ace is a boring and forgettable movie that fails in both story and making. They pointed out that the movie promised a lot but delivered very little.

Critics consistently mentioned the same problems: slow pacing, predictable story, and weak writing. These are serious issues that made the movie hard to enjoy for most viewers.

Box Office Performance

Ace did very poorly at the box office, which means not many people went to watch it in theaters. This is surprising because Vijay Sethupathi is a popular actor with many fans. On the first day (Friday, May 23), the movie made only 1 crore rupees, which is very low for a Vijay Sethupathi film. This is one of his worst opening day collections in recent years.

Even though the movie made 62% more money on the second day, it’s still considered a big failure at the box office. The poor performance shows that people didn’t connect with the story or didn’t want to watch it after hearing bad reviews. When a popular actor’s movie fails this badly, it usually means there are serious problems with the film.

What We Liked

Even though Ace has many problems, there are some good things about it. Vijay Sethupathi’s acting is still worth watching. He’s a natural performer who can make even bad scenes somewhat interesting. His screen presence means you don’t get completely bored when he’s on screen.

Rukmini Vasanth was genuinely good in her role. She acted naturally and had good chemistry with Vijay Sethupathi. Their scenes together were some of the most enjoyable parts of the movie. Yogi Babu’s comedy also provided some laughs, even if it wasn’t groundbreaking humor.

The movie’s ambition to mix different genres shows that the makers were trying to do something interesting. When the heist thriller parts work, they show what the movie could have been. The international locations also make the movie look expensive and well-produced.

What Could Be Better

The biggest problem with Ace is how slowly it moves. For a movie about robbery and crime, it should be exciting and fast-paced. Instead, it drags on and on, making viewers lose interest. The story is too predictable – you can guess what’s going to happen next, which kills any excitement.

The director couldn’t balance the different types of stories he was trying to tell. The movie jumps between being funny and being serious without any smooth transitions. This makes it feel like you’re watching different movies stuck together. The script needed much more work to make the story interesting and believable.

Most of the supporting characters are not well-developed. Apart from the main actors, everyone else feels like they’re just there to fill space. The movie would have been much better with tighter editing – cutting out the boring parts and keeping only the good scenes.

The technical aspects like camera work and music are just average. For a movie shot in multiple countries, it should have looked much more impressive. Better cinematography and background music could have made even the slower scenes more engaging.

Final Verdict

Ace is a wasted opportunity. It had a good actor like Vijay Sethupathi, an interesting story idea about robbery, and the budget to shoot in different countries. But the final result is disappointing because of poor execution and slow storytelling.

While Vijay Sethupathi and Rukmini Vasanth act well, their good performances can’t save a movie with such fundamental problems. The slow pace, predictable story, and confused direction make it hard to recommend this movie to anyone.

For Vijay Sethupathi fans, there might be a few good moments, but overall, this movie doesn’t meet the standards of his better films. The poor box office performance and negative reviews show that audiences expect much better entertainment than what Ace provides.

Despite having good actors and nice locations, Ace fails to create the exciting and fun experience that a heist movie should provide. It’s a forgettable film that will probably be forgotten quickly among the many Tamil movies released in 2025.
